The Blocking Instinct — and Why It Fails

I understand this instinct completely. As a speech coach and child psychologist, I've sat across from hundreds of parents navigating this exact reaction. But I need to be honest with you: the blocking instinct, while natural, is the wrong strategy. And the sooner families move past it, the better positioned their children will be.

You could install parental controls that blocked specific websites. You could restrict access to certain categories of content. I think about this through the lens of my speech coaching work. When I help someone become a better communicator, I never start by telling them what they can't say. I don't hand them a list of banned words or forbidden topics. That approach would be absurd — and it would fail. Instead, I give them the skills to evaluate what they hear, structure what they think, and express what they mean with clarity and intention.

Here are three exercises I recommend families practice together. They take ten minutes, they're genuinely fun, and they build evaluation skills that will last a lifetime.

1. The "Fact or Fiction?" game

Pick a topic your child is curious about — dinosaurs, space, a historical event, anything. Ask the AI a factual question together. Read the response out loud.
